What is a solar inverter and how does it work?

A solar inverter is an integral component of the solar panel system. It carries out several tasks in the system that makes it a crucial part of the installation. A solar inverter or Photo-Voltaic Inverter is an electrical converter that converts the variable direct current to alternating current for its consumption as a utility for homes and commercial infrastructure.



The solar panels create direct current from the sunlight absorbed by the modules. The prime function of a solar inverter is to convert the direct current from the modules into a utility-based alternating current and make it readily available to be used by homes or commercial installation. Other than this, solar inverter carries out many other operations, such as:


Maximization of power output:

solar panels can produce electricity. In case of any malfunction (shading or any other module malfunction), the inverter can readily identify the false peak in the graph, hence reducing the overall power production till the fault is corrected.

The solar inverter enables the customer to track the performance of their system. Many solar inverters are capable of communicating through Ethernet cables, Bluetooth, or built-in Wi-Fi. Despite being user-friendly, it also makes the solar panel system an active target for hackers. Can a solar panel run without an inverter?

Yes, a solar panel can perform without an inverter. However, it is unwise to do so. The same phenomenon is the same as connecting your power lines directly to the grid. The prime function of a solar inverter is to convert the direct current from the modules to alternating utility based voltage to be used in the home or commercially. If the inverter isn’t there, the excess voltage from the modules may cause appliances to short circuit. The inverter helps in the proper functioning of the household appliances and the solar panel itself.
